Toney tallies 26 kills in five-setter against CBU

ABILENE – Lindsey Toney had her third-straight 20-kill performance, but the Wildcat volleyball team fell just short in five sets to the California Baptist Lancers in their final game in the WAC pod this weekend. ACU (7-11, 1-6 WAC) led 2-1, but CBU took sets four and five to come back to top the home team. Three Wildcats tallied double-digit kills in defeat.

Scoring Summary

Set 1: ACU 27, CBU 25
In an exciting first set, ACU trailed early 12-8 before using a 7-3 run to get it back even at 15. ACU then led by two as both teams went back and forth, and the Wildcats eventually built a 21-18 lead after a Lindsey Toney kill and a CBU attack error. ACU led 24-23 and had a chance to close it out, but the Lancers got it even and eventually it was tied at 25. Enter Bryley Steinhilber and Breanna Box, who put together back-to-back kills to win set one.

Set 2: CBU 28, ACU 26
ACU got down 6-2 in the second set, but erased the deficit with a 6-2 run of their own. Toney and Box got back-to-back kills to tie it up and force the CBU timeout. CBU then led 12-10 and it would be the only two-point lead in the set until the 'Cats led 19-17 on a Box kill, forcing another CBU timeout. ACU led 23-21, CBU rattled off back-to-back points to tie it, and then the team swapped points to tie it at 24. Steinhilber tied it up at 25 with a clutch kill, but CBU eventually won it 28-26.

Set 3: ACU 25, CBU 21
A back-and-forth third set saw CBU build a 12-8 lead to force an ACU timeout. ACU then trailed 14-11, but used a 5-2 run to tie the set at 16. Steinhilber and Birkel then lined up back-to-back kills to give ACU an 18-17 lead. Trailing 20-19, the 'Cats rattled off six of the final seven points to take a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth set.

Set 4: CBU 25, ACU 18
Each side had at most a two-point lead through the first 23 points, and after ACU got it to within 18-17, the Lancers scored the next seven to win it 25-18.

Set 5: CBU 15, ACU 10
Toney scored the first four points of the set, but CBU used a 5-1 run to tie it at six, and would eventually push it to a 10-7 lead after a 10-3 run to force an ACU timeout. CBU would eventually win it 15-10 to take the match.
