Adams drops 27 at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Senior Alyssa Adams continues to dominate each and every night, and Wednesday was no different at Johnson Coliseum against Sam Houston. The San Antonio native scored 27 points and added nine rebounds in ACU's 88-72 loss to the Bearkats. The Wildcats (9-3, 2-1 SLC) drop their first Southland game of the season, and will look to bounce back on Saturday against Central Arkansas. Sam Houston took control and never trailed, moving to 7-4 and 3-2 in league play.

Turning Point: The middle of the second quarter.

  • ACU trailed by as many as 10 in the first quarter, but got it to within seven at the end of the period. Anna McLeod got an and-one to go with one second remaining to get it within seven, 23-16. However, Sam Houston came right back in the second period. ACU trailed by five when Amber Leggett and Faith Cook hit big free throws. All of a sudden a Courtney Cleveland layup pushed the Bearkat lead to 11, and ACU was playing catchup.
  • The big key: ACU went just 2-of-14 at the three-point line and turned it over 22 times. Sam Houston capitalized and shot the ball incredibly well from the floor.

Key Plays

  • After Alice Stevenson hit a three early on to get ACU within 6-5, Sam Houston's Faith Cook came right back with one of her own and pushed the lead back to four. That was the story all night. Sam Houston always had a response on offense.
  • McLeod's and-one at the end of the first quarter really started a little momentum for ACU. They would push through to get within five in the second quarter, but Sam Houston pulled away again.
  • McLeod hit four free throws at the end of the third quarter, but Sam Houston got one more look without the shot clock. They took advantage to push the lead back to 14 points going to the fourth quarter.
  • Taylor Morgan scored on back-to-back layups in the fourth and the game was all of a sudden at a 12-point difference again, trailing 80-68. But after the media timeout, Sam Houston scored seven straight points to put the game ultimately away.

Stat Pack

  • Adams did her thing again with 27 points and nine rebounds. This is her second straight game with double-digit points and nine boards, just missing double-doubles. It is her sixth 20-point effort of the season. Alyssa went 7-of-9 at the foul line.
  • McLeod dropped 17 points and was also very efficient at the foul line, going an identical 7-of-9.
  • ACU was just 2-of-14 at the three-point line. The last time the Wildcats hit two or less three-pointers in a game was March 6, 2013 against Texas A&M-Commerce (1). It is the lowest number of three-pointers made in ACU's Division I era.
  • Morgan added eight points and three rebounds while dishing out a pair of assists.
