Softball drops two in Denton

DENTON, Texas—After opening the North Texas Invitational with a win over Missouri State, the Wildcats had two tough tests ahead of them on Saturday. ACU opened the day with a game against Creighton before facing the host team, North Texas. The Wildcats slugged it out with Creighton falling 8-6, and were unable to come up with offense in the next game falling 6-0 to North Texas.

Game 1
The Wildcats played as the home team against Creighton and the Bluejays took no time getting to work in the top of the inning. An opening error on ACU put the leadoff batter on and despite finding a way to get two outs, ACU gave up four runs, all unearned. Each team put up a lone run in the third inning, keeping the deficit at four runs. The Wildcats did cut the Bluejay lead to just one in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning. Creighton had an answer in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs of their own, and while the Wildcats put two more runs on the board it was not enough to top the Bluejays.

Game 2
The Mean Green were locked in from the first pitch and were able to score early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. ACU was never able to get their offense going and while they tallied a couple of extra base hits, they struggled to get those runners home. UNT had four runs on the board through three innings and added two more in the bottom of the fifth as they handed the Wildcats their second shutout of the season.

Stat pack

- Freshman, Lacy Johnson, went 3-5 on the day with two doubles. Her 2-3 performance against Creighton was her first career multi-hit game.
- Samantha Bradley gave up five runs in her start against Creighton, but only on was considered an earned run.
- Katelyn Belch knocked her first homerun of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning against Creighton.
- The Wildcats put five runners on base against the Mean Green, but were unable to plate a run in the game.
- Kaitlyn Huseman got her first extra base hit of the season against UNT.

Farler Figures
On the fight her team showed on the day: "We did see our team compete today in spurts. Unfortunately we were not able to put it together to walk away with a W in the first game. I am proud of our teams resilience at times. We are working to figure out how to fight consistently and expect more out of ourselves."

On another solid relief appearance from Hefner: "Jill did a great job for us in relief. She gave us a lot of opportunities for outs and provided the energy and competitive Ness that we needed at that time."

On Johnson's career day: "Lacy really stepped up today. She was very flexible and competed in multiple areas when we asked her. It was fun to see her come up with some very big hits for us today!"
