Wildcats open Teague Center with 30-point win over HPU

ABILENE, Texas — In their first game at the Teague Center, the Wildcats put up a 30-point victory over Howard Payne. ACU started out slow and struggled with turnovers early, but were able to capitalize on forced turnovers themselves to take a 19-point lead into the half. The team held HPU to 34 percent shooting and had a huge advantage on the offensive boards leading to 23 second chance points. It was a breakout game for freshman Logan McLaughlin as he led the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.

  • The Wildcats opened the game with two huge dunks from Clay Gayman and Kolton Kohl
  • Jameson Richardson hit his first career three to put the Wildcats up 15-6
  • Logan McLaughlin followed the Richardson three with a steal and breakaway dunk, giving ACU the 11-point lead
  • Mahki Morris got a steal and fed Cameron Steele on the run out who used a nice eurostep for the layup
  • McLaughlin closed the first half with a made three to give the Wildcats a 19-point lead
  • With nine minutes left to play, Reggie Miller got a steal leading to a three from McLaughlin
  • Payton Brooks saw his first action in front of his hometown crowd and with just under two minutes left to play he jumped a pass for a steal and a breakaway layup for his first collegiate points
