Wildcats out-claw Panthers in five-set thriller

ABILENE—The Wildcats faced a familiar foe in a rematch against the Panthers of Prairie View A&M. The two teams met this past Sunday in a single match on the Panthers home court. ACU came away with the 3-1 victory on Sunday but the revenge-minded Panthers wouldn't back down in the rematch. The teams battled in a five-set thriller with the Wildcats earning the 3-2 victory.
 
Prairie View struck early in the first set, pushing their lead to as many as five points, but the Wildcats were able to claw back behind an eight-point run which included three service aces from Lindsey Toney. ACU dropped set two after struggling with hitting errors and totaling a negative hitting percentage for the set. The team came out in set three on fire, opening on a 9-0 run before taking the set 25-17. The Panthers made plays down the stretch in set four, closing the match on a 7-1 run to even the match at two sets apiece and forcing a decisive fifth set. The Wildcats were able to close out the fifth, and earn the win to end the night on a high note.
 
Toney had another career game against the Panthers, earning her first career double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. The sophomore just missed a triple-double after totaling eight aces for the match. Eighmy Dobbins put together a solid night as well with 10 kills and eight digs. Senior, Kennedy Shelstead bounced back after a tough game against Fullerton to hit .261 with eight kills nine total blocks. Libero, Mackenzie Harris anchored the defense yet again with 27 digs in the match.

  • Madison Rohre collected her first career double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs.
  • Toney destroyed the DI-era record for aces in a match. The previous record was five. The eight aces also tied her for seventh in the all-time ACU volleyball record book for aces in a match.
  • Breanna Box led the Wildcats with a .308 hitting percentage.
  • Harris totaled at least four digs in each set.
  • The Wildcats outblocked the Panthers 13-10.
  • Shelstead's nine total blocks ties with ten other players for the most total blocks in a match in the DI-era.
