EL PASO, Texas – Freshman
Natalie Jones scored a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes to give ACU a come-from-behind victory over the UTEP Miners of Conference USA. The home team led 1-0 through 69 minutes before Jones tied the game, and the Lubbock native won it in the 88th minute to push the Wildcats to 2-0.
The Goals
- UTEP struck first with a score in the eighth minute by Kori Lewis.
- Jones tied the game for the Wildcats with a shot from the top of the box in the 70th minute that just got past the outstretched arms of the Miner goalkeeper.
- The rookie intercepted the ball and took it in herself for the game-winner in the 88th minute.
The Numbers
- After a slow start offensively, ACU outshot UTEP 16-11 in the second half to lead in that category 18-14 for the game.
- The Wildcats held a slight 8-6 lead in shots placed on frame.
- Goalkeeper
Erin Smith moved to 2-0 on the season, recording five key saves including four in the second half to give her team a chance to win.
- ACU led 8-5 in corners earned.
- Jones led the way with five shot attempts, while
Shay Johnson recorded three.
- ACU is 2-0 for the first time since the 2013 campaign, the team's first as a Division I member.
