HOUSTON – The ACU softball team (13-30, 6-20 SLC) suffered a pair of defeats Friday afternoon at the hands of the Houston Baptist Huskies, with the final game coming down to an eighth-inning, walk-off home run. Caitlyn Brockway launched a solo home run to lead off the eighth frame to win it for HBU, giving the home team a doubleheader sweep after its 10-2 victory in game one.
The teams will meet in the final game of the 2019 season on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
Game 1: HBU 10, ACU 2 (6 Inn.)
A six-run second inning proved to be the difference, breaking open a 1-1 tie for the Huskies. ACU scored the first run of the game on a
Linsey Tomlinson solo home run, but would not lead again.
Calie Burris pushed across a second Wildcat run on a foul out sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, but HBU added three more runs over the final two innings to pull ahead 10-2. The runs in the sixth inning enforced a run-rule victory for the Huskies.
Samantha Bradley took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits. Offensively,
Kayla Keeling led the way with a pair of hits.
Game 2: HBU 2, ACU 1 (8 Inn.)
The back half of the double dip sang to a very different tune than the opener. Pitching took over the game, including Burris, who went the distance for head coach
Bobby Reeves. The sophomore allowed a pair of runs on eight hits, but kept hitters off balance to keep the 'Cats in the game. Houston Baptist had something to say about that as well, as Emma Guindon tossed a seven-inning gem as well. Elliott Estes tossed an inning of relief, and would earn the victory.
The Huskies scored the game's first run in the third inning on an rbi-single, but the Wildcats would respond a couple innings later.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Huseman singled to score fellow rookie
Anna Grace Johnson in the fifth inning, tying the game, 1-1. The pitchers continued to keep the game tied as the game moved to extra innings.
ACU did not score in the top of the eighth, and HBU wasted no time in the home half. Brockway led the inning off with a solo home run to center field to win the game.
Huseman's 2-for-3 effort led the Wildcats in game two.
