Wildcats' big block not enough in Beaumont

BEAUMONT— The Wildcats faced the Cardinals of Lamar in their second match of a weekend road trip, looking to bounce back after a tough loss to McNeese. ACU started the match off tough, struggling to find a passing rhythm, but were able to fight back and battle despite being down early. The Wildcats were able to take one set, but eventually fell in set four in extra points, 27-25.

Set one was all Lamar as they kept the Wildcats out of system and unable to run the offense they wanted. The level of play was upped after set one, with both teams battling defensively, putting up a big block on both sides of the net. Lamar took set two 25-23 and despite being down 0-2, the Wildcats found a way to battle back in set three. ACU jumped out to a huge lead, leading by as many as 10, and kept the Cardinals at by winning set three, 25-21. Set four was close throughout and the Cardinals had a 24-22 lead late. The Wildcats were able to force the set to extra points, but Lamar came away with the set and match winning 27-25.

The Wildcats put together a true team effort as they had four different players with double-digit kills as well as two players with double digit digs. Marybeth Sandercox extender her run of hitting .429 or better with 11 kills on a .526 hitting percentage. Both Lorin McNeil and Eighmy Dobbins had solid games as well hitting .409 and .385, respectively. Dobbins also tallied six digs and two aces on the night. The blocking game was solid for ACU as they had 15 total blocks. Sandercox had 10 blocks to complete a double-double with McNeil totaling six blocks on the night.

Scoring Summary
Set 1: 18-25
Set 2: 23-25
Set 3: 25-21
Set 4: 25-27

Mooney Said It
On the balanced offense: "Our distribution offensively was good today, which lead multiple players in double digit kills."

On the players who stood out during the match: "Marybeth has another great match both offensively and defensively at the net. Eighmy Dobbins was once again steady and a consistent force for our program. She was able to execute her shots at the net and control the first contact in the back row. I thought Logan came into the match in the second set in the libero position and handled it really well."

On losing despite stellar stats: "It is a very disappointing loss. If you looked at the stat sheet, we out played Lamar in almost every category but what you can't see is how Lamar worked and scrambled well on their side of the net. We have to give that to them for today."

On getting back to work to prepare for another road trip next weekend: "We will learn and take away a lot from this week's road trip. We are prepared to get in the gym Monday and start preparing for our next challenge."
