ABILENE – Junior
Christina Arteaga scored her sixth goal of the season Friday night to give the ACU soccer team (7-2-2, 3-0-1 SLC) the lead early against the Northwestern State Lady Demons, however it would not be enough as the game would end in a 1-1 tie at Elmer Gray Stadium. An own goal scored against the Wildcats towards the end of the half evened the game, and neither team would score over the next 68 minutes.
The Goals
- 9' | Arteaga was the beneficiary of a brilliant play by both
Shay Johnson and
Caylen Wright. Out of a scramble, Johnson headed the ball out of a group and Wright was able to get her foot on it to pass it to Arteaga. The Pflugerville native found herself in the clear on the left side and popped a perfect ball over the keeper's hands for the score. The keeper came out to get the ball and Arteaga used it against her for her team-leading sixth of the year.
- 42' | ACU's defense tried to pass the ball around to set something up and instead of the ball rolling to goalkeeper
Rachel Johnson, it ended up being an incredibly challenging ball to get and it turned into a Northwestern State goal.
The Numbers
- ACU and NSU tied in total shot attempts, but the shots on goal were overwhelming. The Wildcats led 13-3 in that category.
- NSU's goalkeeper Kayla Bomben was really good in net, tallying 12 saves.
-
Rachel Johnson tallied three saves in the draw.
- Arteaga's seven shot attempts led the way, while
Shay Johnson,
Emily Heidman,
Alyssia Anuat, and
Natalie Jones each tallied two.
Head Coach Casey Wilson
"It was a frustrating game to tie. We had 13 [shots] on frame tonight and many of them were dangerous shots and opportunities. I give their keeper a lot of credit for keeping them in the game though. NSU is a solid team and will do well in conference play."
