Offense shines at Lamar Friday night

BEAUMONT, Texas – The ACU soccer team scored four goals Friday night at Lamar University, but four second-half goals for the home team propelled the Cardinals to a 6-4 victory over the Wildcats. A 2-1 halftime lead was not enough as one of the top scoring offenses in the country continued its excellence in 2019, as Lamar ranks eighth nationally with 44 total goals.

The Goals
- 12' | Lamar's Madison Ledet scored the first goal of the night.
- 36' | Samantha Vestal scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the game.
- 37' | Freshman Natalie Jones returned from injury in style with her sixth goal of 2019, giving ACU a halftime lead. Shay Johnson earned the assist.
- 61' | Anna Loftus tied the game with the first score of the second half for the Cardinals. It was the first of four goals in the final 45 minutes for the home team.
- 62' | Junior Christina Arteaga wasted no time tying the game, adding her ninth goal of 2019. Vestal and Jones combined for the double assist.
- 69' | Lucy Ashworth of Lamar found the equalizer on an assist from Kaisa Juvonen to tie the game at 3-3.
- 70' | The offense continued for the Cardinals with a goal from Anna Loftus to give her team the 4-3 advantage.
- 81' | Freshman Caylen Wright netted her fifth goal of the season to tie the game once more.
- 88' | Lucy Ashworth gave Lamar a lead they would not surrender.
- 88' | Just seconds later, the Cardinals got a goal from Esther Okoronkwo to secure the victory, 6-4.

The Numbers
- The Wildcats outshot the host school 22-21, but Lamar held a slight 10-9 lead in shots placed on goal.
- Goalkeeper Rachel Johnson tallied four saves in defeat.
- Both teams recorded seven corner kicks.
- Arteaga and Sophie Standifer led the way with six shot attempts apiece.
- Wright added three shots, while Jones and Vestal each tallied two.

"It was a tough one [tonight]. When you score four goals and are dangerous offensively the whole game and knocking on the door, it is sad to lose. We knew what we had to do defensively tonight, but we made mistakes that we paid for. We will bounce back."
