ABILENE — The ACU Wildcats only scored once Tuesday night, but that turned out to be all they needed as they knocked off Dallas Christian, 1-0, in a non-conference game at Crutcher Scott Field.
The Wildcats (16-15) scored in the bottom of the sixth and that was enough as three pitchers limited the Crusaders (4-23) to just four singles in the ballgame.
Colton Brasher (3-4) got the win, giving up three hits and striking out three Crusaders in six solid innings of work.
Caleb Dougherty gave up one walk and struck out two batters in two innings and
Ryan Knowles pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season. In their last five games, ACU pitchers have allowed just 12 runs, 28 hits and 12 walks while striking out 27 batters. The Wildcats are 3-2 in those games with a pair of shutout victories.
ACU's offense collected 10 hits in the game, but stranded 15 runners on base as the Wildcats popped out four times and had seven other flyball outs against Dallas Christian pitching.
Derek Scott and
Riley Donahue each had a pair of hits, but it was Matt Munoz who scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning. He led off the inning by doubling to right field, went to third on a bunt single by
Zach Smith and scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt by
Lane Bourland that was misplayed by DCC pitcher Cameron Maddox.
The Wildcats had baserunners in every inning, but that was the only time they were able to put a runner across the plate.
ACU will be back in action this weekend when it hosts Houston Baptist in a three-game Southland Conference series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
