CORPUS CHRISTI – The ACU Wildcats scored three runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh Saturday afternoon to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 win as they knocked off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to win the weekend series two games to one.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 12-17 overall and 6-6 in Southland Conference play. Corpus Christi, meanwhile, falls to 9-25-1 and 1-11. ACU will be back in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts No. __ Baylor at Wells Field before going back on the road to take on Nicholls in a three-game Southland Conference series next weekend in Thibodaux, La. The Colonels are 9-3 and in second place in the Southland standings going into next weekend's series.
Hannah Null went the distance for the Wildcats on Saturday to improve to 10-9 on the season. She surrendered just three hits and one run while striking out five Islanders and not walking a batter. However, she gave up an RBI single to Destiny Diaz in the bottom of the fourth as the Islanders broke a scoreless tie to take a 1-0 lead.
That lead stood up until the top of the sixth when freshman catcher
Kayla Keeling singled to drive in
Braegan Hamilton and
Donelle Johnson to give ACU a 2-1 lead.
Brianna Barnhill followed with an RBI single to drive in in courtesy runner Blakeli Brookerson to make it a 3-1 ACU lead.
The Wildcats extended that lead in the seventh when
Donelle Johnson reached on an error, allowing
Katelyn Belch to score from second. Hamilton then tripled to right field to plate Johnson before
Peyton Hedrick grounded out to drive in Hamilton with the game's final run.
