HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State defeated Abilene Christian 10-0 in eight innings Saturday to conclude their three-game series at Dan Sanders Stadium. The Bearkats remain undefeated in Southland Conference play at 9-0 while the Wildcats slipped to 2-10 with another league road trip to McNeese set for next weekend (April 6-8).
The Bearkats scored five runs in the first – four following a 6-4-3 double play – then tacked on two unearned runs in the third before adding single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Shortstop Andrew Fregia was Sam Houston's leading slugger this afternoon, finishing a double shy of the cycle by going 3-for-4 with three runs, a triple, solo home run and two RBI.
Two other Bearkats ripped a pair of base hits as the home team out-slugged the Wildcats, 12-7.
ACU continually placed runners on base but could never break the shutout pitched by starter Nick Mikolajchak (4-3) and releivers Brad Demco and Landon Ausley – a group that combined for 10 strikeouts and 10 runners left on base, half of which were stranded in scoring position. The Wildcats left two runners on board from the first to third innings, plus ones in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth.
Designated hitter
Caleb Kyle and right fielder
Riley Donahue each finished 2-for-4, while junior second baseman
Dalon Farkas extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a third-inning single to center field.
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. home game vs. UT Arlington. The Mavs beat the Wildcats, 3-0, earlier this month on March 20.
