ABILENE – Junior
Lexie Ducat enjoyed her best game as a Wildcat, scoring 25 points on 9-13 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds in Abilene Christian's 90-43 victory over Schreiner Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
The win lifted ACU's record to 7-1 and 4-0 at home, while the Mountaineers fell to 0-8.
Julie Goodenough and Lexie Ducat postgame recap
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-2 lead thanks to a game-opening trey by junior
Dominique Golightly (10 points, nine rebounds, six steals) and back-to-back buckets by Ducat. After Schreiner closed to within six points at 15-9, ACU finished the quarter on a 8-0 flourish that featured consecutive 3-pointers from reserves
Josie Larson and
Diamond Willcot.
The bench outscored Schreiner, 29-14, and was especially aggressive during a 25-7 fourth quarter in which the Wildcats finished the game on a 13-3 run. Junior guard Pam Herrera scored all six of her points during this stretch, while teammate
Lexi Kirgan contributed a layup and two free throws among her six points.
ACU led 25-11 after the first quarter and used a Ducat /
Sara Williamson-led 13-6 run midway through the second quarter to further pad its lead to 40-22. Williamson, who scored 18 points today with four rebounds, three steals and five assists in only 19 minutes, sparked the run with a layup coming off her offensive rebound at 6:07. Ducat then scored on three consecutive attempts with Williamson twice there to assist.
Williamson later converted a 3-point play in extending the Wildcat lead to 38-22 and then sank a fast-break layup off an assist from Herrera, who had four assists in 12 minutes.
ACU took a 44-26 lead into halftime, scored the first bucket of the third quarter (Ducat), and followed up with a 16-2 run that made it a 63-30 game. Ducat and Williamson once again were instrumental in this outburst, responsible for all but the final four points that were scored by Golightly.
Schreiner shot only 39.0 percent (16-41) from the floor and made just 2-of-12 attempts in the fourth quarter. They also coughed the ball up 33 times, leading to 36 Wildcat points off turnovers.
ACU has this week off from competition as it prepares for next Saturday's Christmas Slam game (Dec. 8) vs. Arkansas. The Wildcats and Razorbacks – the first SEC team to play at Moody Coliseum – will tip off at 1 p.m. The men will play first at 10:30 a.m. vs. Schreiner.
