Privateers out-slug Wildcats, 12-6, to take second game

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers have been one of the best offensive teams in the Southland Conference throughout the early part of the season, and they showed off that prowess once again Saturday afternoon as they hammered out 15 hits against six ACU pitchers on their way to a 12-6 win over the Wildcats at Maestri Field.

The Wildcats' second straight loss drops them to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in the Southland, while the Privateers improve to 12-7 and 2-3. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday before ACU returns to Abilene to take on No. 3 TCU at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Crutcher Scott Field.

UNO turned a close game into a blowout with five runs in the fourth and then poured it on with four more runs in the seventh inning. Samuel Capielano, Dakota Dean, Omar Magee and Orynn Veillon each had two RBI for the Privateers, while Jay Robinson was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and one RBI.

ACU starting pitcher Case Rolen gave up three runs, three hits and three walks while striking out five Privateers in three innings of work. Rolen was followed by Keaton Brewer (four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning), Caleb Cougherty (one unearned in 2 1/3 innings), Blake Bouffard (three hits and four runs), Zach Kornely, and Collin Dudley.

The Wildcats continued to hit the ball themselves as they had 10 hits in the game, six of them going for extra bases as they had five doubles and one home run. Russell Crippen had a pair of doubles and Luis Trevino, Mark Pearson and Myles Paschall had one apiece. Koby Claborn had a three-run home run in the eighth inning to draw ACU to within 12-5.
