ABILENE – ACU designated hitter
Luis Trevino continued his torrid early season pace Tuesday night and the Wildcats ran their winning streak to four straight games with a 13-5 win over Texas-Permian Basin in a non-conference contest at Crutcher Scott Field.
The Falcons – 6-4 overall and members of the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference – grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but failed to provide any answers after that as the Wildcats reeled off eight unanswered runs en route to their fourth straight victory after an 0-4 start.
The Wildcats once again went with the "Johnny Wholestaff" approach on the mound with six pitchers toeing the rubber and four of them throwing just one inning.
KEY INNING
After falling behind 3-0 through two innings, the Wildcats answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Trevino drove in two runs and he went to second and a third run scored on an error by UTPB rightfielder Justin Zazulak.
The Wildcats took the lead for good and put the game away in the fourth inning when Trevino cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field to give ACU a 7-3 lead.
ON THE MOUND
Drew Hanson started the game for the Wildcats and went one inning before giving way to a parade of ACU pitchers, starting with
Cyle Watkins who went two innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
Blake Bouffard, however, came into the game and settled it down, throwing three innings of one-run baseball and striking out five Falcons to pick up the win.
AT THE PLATE
Trevino finished the game 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBI, the most RBI in a game by a Wildcat since
Russell Crippen drove in five runs in a Southland Conference game against New Orleans on May 3, 2015.
First baseman
Koby Claborn was also 3 for 4 with two runs scored, and
Dalon Farkas was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and four RBI with two coming in on a two-run single in the eighth. Freshman
Anthony Dominguez was 2 for 4 with one run scored.
NOTABLE
• Trevino now has 12 RBI in just eight games. Last year, Crippen led the Wildcats in RBI with 19 in 53 games.
• The Wildcats pounded out a season-high 16 hits (three doubles, 13 singles) to push their team batting average to .298.
