ABILENE – ACU's defense held Schreiner to 21 points over the final 23 minutes of Saturday's contest and created 26 Mountaineer turnovers leading the Wildcats to a 71-43 rout of Schreiner in a non-conference men's contest at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats' third win in their last four games pushes them to 5-3 on the season, while Schreiner falls to 2-5. ACU will be back in action Wednesday at 8 p.m. (Abilene time) when it takes on Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
ACU led 29-9 in the first half before the Mountaineers went on a 13-1 run against Wildcat reserves to trim their deficit to 30-22 with 3:24 left in the first half after a 3-pointer by Matthew Rindahl. ACU head coach
Joe Golding then re-inserted his starters and the Wildcats re-asserted their dominance.
ACU outscored the Mountaineers 12-2 over the final three minutes of the first half to carry a 42-24 lead to halftime. Tevin Foster – who had seven points, three rebounds, five assists and five of the Wildcats' 19 steals – had five points in the half-ending run, while Jaren Lewis had three and Jalone Friday and Jaylen Franklin two apiece.
The Wildcats' solid defensive work continued in the second half as they limited the Mountaineers to just 19 points. Schreiner hit just 4 of 19 shots from the field, including just one from two-point range as the Mountainers were 3 of 10 from 3-point range in the second half.
ACU's bench played most of the second half as the starters were able to get some rest ahead of Wednesday night's game at Air Force. However, Friday led all scorers with 17 points in just 14 minutes, while Lewis had 14 in only 26 minutes. Franklin had eight points as every Wildcat on the roster played and either scored or pulled down a rebound.
