ABILENE - ACU women's basketball faces its most prolific opponent to date Thursday night when it tips off against nationally fourth-ranked Baylor at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. The Bears have won two national championships and eight Big 12 tournament titles under head coach Kim Mulkey, who took over the program in 2000.
Last year's Bears went 36-2 to reach the NCAA Elite Eight and once again look primed to make a deep run as they're off to a 7-1 start with three of those wins coming against nationally ranked opposition from UCLA (84-70), DePaul (104-72) and Ohio State (85-68). Two other Baylor victories have come against the Southland Conference with the Bears manhandling both Houston Baptist (118-43) and Southeastern Louisiana (109-38) in recent weeks.
The Bears' lone loss was a 72-61 decision at No. 2 Connecticut on Nov. 17.
Thursday's game will be televised by Fox College Sports with John Morris and Jim Haller handling the play-by-play and analysis, while the ACU home radio call on 102.7 FM will come from
Seth Wilson and
Mary Kate Rotenberry.
This is only the second all-time contest between the Wildcats and Bears with their first and only other previous meeting taking place early in the 1972-73 season. Baylor won that game, 61-34.
The Wildcats enter this contest hoping to break a two-game losing streak, which is their first since the 2014-15 season when they dropped consecutive conference games to Lamar. ACU began its trip last Saturday with a 71-45 defeat at No. 25 Texas A&M, and last night they were edged, 71-68, at UTSA.
Despite the loss, ACU received some good news Tuesday as senior guard
Alexis Mason was cleared to play for the first time since suffering an injury during a Nov. 7 game vs. McMurry. Mason came off the bench in the second quarter and scored eight points vs. the Roadrunners in 15 minutes with one rebound, assist and steal.
The Wildcats were led in scoring last night by their bench, which contributed 35 of the team's 68 points. Freshman
Dominique Golightly totaled 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting with three 3-pointers and junior
Sierra Allen reached double figures for the fourth time in five games with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Senior forward
Lizzy Dimba also registered a solid game from the floor, making four of nine buckets and a career single high three treys to finish with 11 points.
A bench player has now led the Wildcats in scoring for two straight games as Allen chipped in 12 points at Texas A&M. The last time ACU was led in scoring by a reserve in consecutive games was Jan. 14 and 17, 2015 as during this span,
Sydney Shelstead scored 19 at McNeese and Dimba totaled 17 vs. Stephen F. Austin.
And prior to last night at UTSA, the Wildcat bench last outpointed its starters on Nov. 13, 2012 in a 74-71 home loss vs. Texas Permian Basin. ACU received 40 points that night from its bench which was composed of Savannah Smith (2), Whitney West (13), Kynzie Newman (12) and Mack Lankford (13).
