Start of baseball series vs. Sam Houston State delayed until Saturday

ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats return home for a three-game series this weekend when they host Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference matchup at Crutcher Scott Field.

The series was set to begin Friday night, but heavy rain in the Abilene area forced the series back one day. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 2 p.m. with the series finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday. All three games will be Webcast at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/abilene/.

The Wildcats enter the series at 8-26 overall and 6-9 in league play, while the Bearkats have won six straight games to get to 20-19 overall and 11-7 in league play.

ACU has played three of the best teams in the country over the last 10 days and come out on the losing side in each of those three games. But not without a fight. Last Monday (April 6), the Wildcats lost to No. 2 TCU, 4-3, and Tuesday night ACU lost at home to No. 19 Texas Tech, 7-6. Wednesday night in College Station, the Wildcats dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 1-ranked Texas A&M at Blue Bell Park.

The Bearkats shut out Texas, 5-0, Tuesday night in Austin and have won six straight games entering the series to get right back into the thick of the race in the Southland Conference.

ACU is hitting .243 on the season, led by senior first baseman Tyler Eager, who is hitting .295 with one home run and 21 RBI. Russell Crippen (13), Alex Copeland (13) and Marcelle Carter (12) are the only other theree Wildcats who have reached double figures in RBI tho season.

Garrett deMeyere (2-3, 4.40 ERA) will get the start for ACU in Friday's game, followed by Aaron Mason (0-6, 6.88 ERA) on Saturday and Thomas Altimont (1-7, 4.60 ERA) on Sunday.

Sam Houston State is hitting .288 as a team, led by Travis Lee, who is hitting .340 on the season. Spence Rahm is among Southland league leaders in batting average (.338), home runs (five) and RBI (29).

Andrew Godail (2-4, 2.28 ERA) will get the start on Friday, followed by Logan Boyd (4-3, 3.71) on Saturday and Sam Odom (2-4, 4.35 ) on Sunday.
