SFA's late home runs sink softball in series finale

ABILENE - Abilene Christian softball took a two-run lead into the late innings Saturday but two home runs by Stephen F. Austin catcher Taylor Fraccastoro in the sixth and seventh propelled the Ladyjacks to a 14-7  victory and series sweep of the Wildcats.

SFA was down to its final out of the sixth inning, trailing 7-5, when Fraccastoro blasted a go-ahead three-run homer over the wall in left-center field. One inning later she followed a two-run shot by Brittany Lewis with a grand-slam off the scoreboard to finish the game 2-for-4 with three runs and seven RBI.

ACU flashed some early muscle at the plate but couldn't generate much offense against reliever Callee Guffey, who limited the Wildcats to one run on two hits over the final 5.1 innings.

Guffey won all three games this weekend for SFA in improving to 8-11.

The Wildcats started down a run but quickly took the lead in the first on a two-run single to center by Alyson Bishoff. SFA then tied the score at 2-2 in the second when Lindsay Campbell scored on a ground ball to third base.

ACU started a two-out rally in its half of the second as Taylor Brown and Peyton Hedrick reached base on a walk and error, leading up to Holly Neese's three-run bomb against SFA starter Hannah Welch that made it 6-2.

The Ladyjacks countered that inning with a three-run third, during which a pair of errors on one play helped the visitors climb back into the game at 6-5.

ACU scored its seventh and final run in the third when Baylee Travers hit her first home run of the season off Guffey. But from there only four Wildcats would reach base over the final five innings.

The Wildcats return to action next weekend for a three-game series at Sam Houston State.
