Softball splits season series with UTA following home loss to Mavs

ABILENE, Texas - Texas Arlington put a couple crooked numbers on the scoreboard Wednesday night en route to defeating Abilene Christian softball, 14-0, at Poly Wells Field.

The Mavs scored four times in the third to break a scoreless tie and later sent 14 batters to the plate in scoring 10 times in the fifth against starter Emily Seidel and reliever Julia Montoya. The key hits that frame included a bases-clearing double by Nina Villanueva and a follow-up two-run home run by clean-up batter Meagan Michele.

Villanueva and Michele combined to go 6-for-7 with six runs and seven RBI, while starting pitcher Sam Montes evened her season record at 8-8 by scattering six hits with two strikeouts.

ACU finished with six hits, all of which were singles. Leadoff batter Taylor Brown went 2-of-3 and tried to score a run in the third inning, but was thrown out at home by the Mavs' centerfielder.

Holly Neese was 2-for-2, while Peyton Hedrick and Brianna Barnhill each went 1-for-2.

The Wildcats return to action Friday for the start of a three-game series vs. first-place McNeese State. ACU and the Cowgirls will play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Friday and have a single game Saturday at noon.

All three games will be live streamed on ACUSports.com.
