Lamar rallies to complete doubleheader sweep of ACU Softball

BEAUMONT, TEXAS - Jenna Holland's two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh gave Lamar softball a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Abilene Christian and sweep of their doubleheader Saturday at the Lamar Softball Complex.

The Wildcats and senior Emily Seidel took a 4-3 lead into the final frame, but the Cardinals put their first two runners on base courtesy of a walk and error made on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Seidel then got a ground ball to second to advance the runners into scoring position and walked cleanup hitter Shannon Sain to load the bases.

Seidel got Stephanie Meeuwsen to pop up to short for the second out, but couldn't seal the complete-game effort as Holland rifled one back up the middle for the walk-off single.

The losses dropped ACU's season and conference records to 4-16 and 1-4, while the 12-10 Cardinals kept their conference unbeaten streak alive at 5-0.

The Cardinals and Wildcats conclude their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m.

ACU received a bases-loaded walk to score first in game two, but Lamar was quick to counter with three runs as it sent eight batters to the plate in its half of the frame. Holland tied the score with a BB RBI and Brynn Baca broke the deadlock with a two-run single up the middle.

The Cardinals maintained that lead until the fifth when an error by their first baseman kept the inning alive for Holly Neese's RBI double that plated Taylor Brown. Cara Hoover then hit a game-tying pinch hit RBI single.

ACU took its second lead of the game in the sixth when Brown tripled in Demi McNulty, who reached first on a two-out infield single. Brown's triple was her fourth of the spring and she finished the twinbill 3-for-6 with three runs and a RBI.

Game one was won by Lamar, 13-1 in 5.0 innings. ACU scored the game's first run on a RBI single by Peyton Hedrick, but it was all Cardinals afterward as they plated two in the third with two outs followed by 11 in the fourth.
