SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Conference rivals through two different levels of NCAA competition since 2008, Abilene Christian soccer and Incarnate Word played to only the second draw in series history Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium, 1-1.
Today's result keeps ACU ahead in the all-time series at 4-3-2 and brought their season and Southland Conference records to 7-8-2 and 4-3-2, while the Cardinals are now 1-11-2 (1-4-2 SLC).
The last time these two sides finished deadlocked was September of 2011. ACU and UIW then split their season series in 2012, and the Wildcats were 3-1 winners at home a year ago.
Senior
Taylor Brown first scored for the Wildcats today - her third goal of the year - in the 18th minute off an assist from classmate
Sarah Schoch, however, the Cardinals tied the score right before halftime with an Jazma Latu goal in the 42nd minute. She was assisted by Megan Baker.
ACU's offense dominated the second half offensive stat sheet with a 7-1 advantage in shots and five corner kicks but couldn't get anything else past Cardinal goalkeeper Heather Kowalik who made five saves.
The Wildcats fired only two shots in the first overtime. Meagan Baer's attempt was blocked, while a header by Brown off a
Lindsey Jones corner kick with eight seconds remaining sailed wide.
In the second overtime session, ACU had another shot blocked and tries by Schoch and
Emily Sumrall both were stopped by Kowalik. By comparison, UIW recorded just one shot through both overtimes and it went high with 1:08 seconds to go.
The Cardinals took four shots in the first period but only one in the second period, which was saved by
Sydney Newton in the 88th minute. Newton made three saves in her complete-match effort.
The Wildcats return to action at Shotwell Stadium Friday at noon and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for their season-ending matches vs. Lamar and McNeese.
