ABILENE - Sophomore Diana Garcia-Muñoz Tuesday was voted Southland Conference Female Cross Country Runner of the Week after turning in a winning 6K of 22:54.2 Saturday at the Incarnate Word Invitational.

This is Garcia-Muñoz' second conference citation of the season. She also won the award on Sept. 9 after winning the West Texas College Open 5K.

Garcia finished the UIW course at Live Oak Park in 22:54.2 for her first collegiate 6K win, 10.7 seconds ahead of runner-up and teammate Alexandria Hackett (23:04.9). The one-two finish allowed ACU to claim the women's title with 33 points over their Southland Conference rivals from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (58) and Incarnate Word (67), plus the Bobcats (82) and UT-Pan American.

Thirteen non-NCAA Division I schools also were part of the field that was comprised of 134 runners.

Garcia-Muñoz and the Wildcats are off from competition until Nov. 1 when they head to Natchitoches, La., and the campus of Northwestern State University for the Southland Conference Championships.

Edgar Martinez of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was voted as the Southland's Men's XC runner of the week. Martinez led the Islanders to a first-place overall finish this past weekend at the UIW Invitational, running a career-best 24:55.5 in the 8K race on his way to a third-place finish.
