ABILENE – Senior all-America and conference and national champion Amanda Ouedraogo added another line to her already impressive resume after breaking Abilene Christian's record in the outdoor triple jump Saturday at the 55th-annual Mt. SAC Relays.
A native of Hauts de Seine, France, Ouedraogo finished sixth in the elite field with a career-best effort of 43-feet, 6 inches (13.26 meters), which she recorded on her final attempt. Ouedraogo opened with a distance of 12.85 meters and then fouled three-straight times before surpassing Stephanie Warren's former school record of 43-04.25 (13.21m). Warren's performance won her the 2004 NCAA D-II title in Walnut, Calif., which, coincidentally, serves as the host city for the Mt. SAC Relays.
Ouedraogo has twice competed in the triple jump this spring and each time has recorded a NCAA automatic qualifying mark; however, she still ranks second in D-II to Angelo State's Kearah Danville (43-7/13.28m).
Ouedraogo also became the school record holder in the indoor triple jump earlier this season after winning the Lone Star Conference title with a distance of 43-00.50 (13.12m). The old record of 42-08.25 had belonged to Mazel Thomas since January 28, 1989.
Ouedraogo's countryman and senior Baptiste Kerjean (St. Brieuc, France) also had an excellent showing at Mt. SAC as he broke his own school record in the hammer throw with an eighth-place distance of 218-00 (66.44m). Kerjean first became ACU's record holder in this event at last spring's Oliver Jackson Classic (210-3/64.08) and then hit a mark of 210-9 (64.25m) for third place at NCAA D-II championships in Pueblo.
Kerjean broke the record a third time near the end of March at the 2013 Texas Relays, placing third with a distance of 213-08 (65.13m).
Kerjean currently ranks second in the D-II hammer throw rankings to Ashland's Garrett Grey (218-10/66.71m)
In the Mt. SAC track events, seniors Chloe Susset and Ayesha Rumble each recorded season best NCAA provisional marks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:39.43) and 800-meter run (2:11.08). Susset's time pushed her up to seventh in the D-II rankings, while Rumble moved up to 13th.
Elsewhere, freshman Xavier King registered a season and career best in the 1500m of 3:54.42 and Banjo Jaiyesimi clocked a time of 1:55.19 in the 800-meter run.
ACU this weekend also sent a large contingent of student-athletes to Baylor's Michael Johnson/Dr. Pepper Classic, where additional provisional marks were recorded by Shalania Lakey in the hammer (164-04), Ameilia Mitchell in the javelin (136-05) and Andrew Hudson in the discus (177-06).
Hudson's throw is the fifth best recorded by a D-II competitor this season, and placed him third overall behind Texas Tech's Kole Weldon (185-02) and Baylor's Desmine Hilliard (179-07).
On Baylor's Hart-Patterson track, runner-up showings were recorded by freshman Johnathan Farquharson in the 100 (10.67), James Grantham in the 1500 (3:56.10) and Jeremy Tatham in the 110 hurdles (15.40).
ACU's men's 4x100 team of Osei Allyene-Forte, Devan Brown, Farquharson and Jordan Geary just missed tying its season best provisional mark of 40.78 by .01 seconds.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday for the Red Raider Open hosted by Texas Tech's Terry and Linda Fuller Track & Field Complex. This is ACU's final regular season meet.
