ABILENE - Coming off one of its biggest wins over rival Angelo State, the Abilene Christian women's basketball team looks to put the finishing touches on a perfect homestand Tuesday night when it plays host to Northwood University at 7 p.m.
The first-ever game between the Wildcats and Knights - a NAIA program from Cedar Hill, Texas - will be live streamed via the
ACU Sports portal provided by Stretch Internet.
Northwood (4-1) is the second NAIA team from the Sooner Athletic Conference the Wildcats will have faced this season, joining Wayland Baptist, which lost by 20 at Moody Coliseum, 79-59 on Nov. 11.
The Wildcats (3-0) followed that win with last Thursday's 87-41 decision over their old rivals from ASU. The team shot 55.7 percent in its 46-point victory, which was its largest over the Rambelles since the 1995-96 campaign when that edition of the Wildcats thumped ASU, 105-52.
ACU's .557 shooting percentage was its highest during the
Julie Goodenough era and marked only the fifth time since the start of the 2012-13 season that the Wildcats had shot better than 50 percent. The Wildcats' highest single-game shooting percentage from last year was 54.3, which also came against the Rambelles.
Freshman
Suzzy Dimba led all Wildcat scorers with 21 points, which she scored in just 20 minutes off the bench. Dimba entered the game with about 11 minutes remaining in the first half and sank 5-of-6 baskets, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, and then banked in four more field goals though nine minutes in the second half.
Dimba's performance pushed her up to second place in the Southland Conference with a .607 (17-28) field-goal percentage. She also is ranked among the top-30 conference scorers with 13.3 points per game along with sophomore
Whitney West (16.7 ppg) and
Renata Marquez (15.7 ppg).
As a team, ACU is the conference's No. 1 squad in terms of scoring offense (92.3 ppg) and scoring margin (+34.7) as well as assists (22.3) and 3-point field goals made (13.0). Lamar is the next closest team in terms of 3-pointers with 9.0 made per game.
Freshman
Alexis Mason is first among all conference individuals with 6.7 assists per game and tied for first with a 3.3 assist/turnover ratio.
Northwood's early season schedule has included wins over Crowley's Ridge College (78-41), Southwestern Adventist (117-36), Dallas Christian (81-33) and University of the Southwest (57-52). The Knights lone defeat came at Northern New Mexico College, falling 83-56.
Northwood is shooting .387 as a team, and averaging 77.8 points and 50.6 rebounds per game. The Knights are led in scoring by the trio of Kayla Robinson (11.3), B'ria Wagner (10.2) and Crystal Carter (10.0).
