Key second-half run propels Aggies to 77-65 win over Wildcats


LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron outscored ACU 14-5 over a critical six-minute second-half stretch Saturday afternoon as the Aggies took a 77-65 win over the Wildcats in a Lone Star Conference men's basketball game at Aggie Gym.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-12 overall and 2-10 in the LSC and into ninth place in the 10-team league.  The Wildcats are trying to get into the top eight at the end of the regular season in order to earn a spot in the LSC Post-Season Tournament in Allen.

The Wildcats will return to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Canyon against West Texas A&M.

The Wildcats trailed by nine points with 11:38 left before Antonio Bell hit a three-point play with 11:24 left and then buried a 3-pointer with 10:35 left to make it 48-45.  Kendall Durant then hit a short jumper in the lane to cut the lead to 48-47 with 9:56 to play, forcing a Cameron timeout.

But the Aggies responded with a 3-pointer by Milton Garner, a layup by Desmond Henry, a jumper by Henry, a free throw by Henry, a free throw by Craig Foster, two free throws by Henry, two free throws by Andrew D. Thomas and another Thomas free throw to push the lead to 62-52 with 2:39 to play.

ACU shot just 38 percent from the floor, hitting just 19 of 50 shots  from the field, including only 9 of 27 from 3-point range (33.3 percent).

Bell led the Wildcats (and all scorers) with 29 points on 6 off shooting from the field (5 of 8 from 3-point range) and 12 of 16 from the free throw line.  Durant added 20 points for the Wildcats, hitting 7 of 12 from the field (3 of 6 from the arc) in his first start at point guard.
