ABILENE –
Kendall Durant's 23 points weren't enough for Abilene Christian as Cameron used a 22-9 second-half run to knock off the Wildcats, 64-58, in their Lone Star Conference season opener Saturday night at Moody Coliseum.
The win lifted Cameron's overall and conference records to 6-4 and 3-1, while ACU dropped to 5-3 and 0-1.
The Wildcats led by as many as 11 points early in the second half before the Aggies began to chip away. A pair of three-point plays by Desmond Henry and Thomas Razor cut the Wildcats' lead to five within a minute of action, and then Thomas dropped in another layup that got Cameron within a possession at the 12:29 mark.
Twice ACU would build its lead back to seven following baskets from
Eric Milam and Durant, but Cameron's Milton Garner countered with a three and then consecutive shots from Vinicius Telo and Henry gave the Aggies their first lead at 49-48 and 7:07 remaining.
A jumper from Durant at the 5:37 mark broke a five-minute ACU scoreless streak and momentarily gave the home team its lead back at two points, but then Telo scored the next four points, first on a slam dunk and later on a jumper from outside the paint.
Marc Little buried a 3-pointer after the final media timeout at 3:55 to put ACU up for the final time at 54-53, as Cameron would go on a game-ending 11-3 run led by Garner's five points.
Garner led all Aggies with 20 points, hitting 6-of-17 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 from the foul line. Telo finished the game with 13 points.
After being held to 29 percent shooing in the first half, Cameron made 57.7 percent of its second-half attempts in outscoring ACU 41-28 over the final 20 minutes.
ACU entered the half up by seven at 30-23 sparked by Durant's 15 points. Durant started by hitting on 6-of-8 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats also forced 14 first-half turnovers, which they converted into 11 points. Cameron made just four more turnovers in the second half.
