ABILENE – ACU basketball teams return to Moody Coliseum looking to both get back in the win column as they host Angelo State on Saturday afternoon. The men will be looking to for their second Lone Star South win and trying to avenge an earlier season loss to the Rams. The women will also be looking to even the season series against the Rambelles in a WBCA Pink Zone game with tipoff at 2 p.m.
The ACU men will be looking to get back into the left side of the LSC standings on Saturday as they host Angelo State. The Wildcats have had a week off to prepare for the Rams after a loss last Saturday to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
After a narrow one-point loss to No. 6 Midwestern State and a win over the Javelinas, ACU has lost six of their last seven games. However, the Wildcats will have the advantage of playing inside Moody Coliseum where they have played well and are 7-6 on the season.
Junior guard Eddie Thompson has been solid for the Wildcats leading them in scoring with 14.5 points per game, which is also good for fifth best in the LSC.
ACU fell to Angelo State 58-82 on last month, in San Angelo as the LSC's leading scorer Lamarshall Corbett finished with a game high 19 points. The Rams placed four players in double figures including Corbett as they forced 21 turnovers. ASU also shot 81% from the free throw line, as the Wildcats were 18 of 58 from the field and just 1 of 10 from behind the three-point arc.
In the women's game the Wildcats host Angelo State in a pivotal Lone Star South matchup inside Moody Coliseum. The Wildcats are 4-3 in the South Division while Angelo State is also 4-3 and tied for fourth with the Wildcats.
The Wildcats who have not played since Saturday and have had a week to prepare since their loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville last weekend. ACU will be looking to get back on the winning track as they have won seven of their last ten including a 69-67 win over No. 9-ranked West Texas A&M.
The Rambelles ended the Wildcats five game winning streak on January 23, as the Wildcats went on to drop consecutive games for only the second time all season. ACU who is 14-8 overall and 6-3 at home will have the advantage of playing in Abilene, as Angelo State is just 4-4 on the road this season.
Last month in San Angelo the Wildcats were coming off a week long layoff as they fell to the Rambelles 52-57. ACU only had two players in double figures as Angelo State held the LSC leading scorer Jamie Meyer to 12 points. Courtney Laing scored a season high 15 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
ACU was also out-rebounded and committed 19 turnovers in the loss. The Rambelles who held the Wildcats to just eight rebounds in the first half, were able to get the free throw line 11 more times than ACU as they were 14 of 19 from the charity stripe. The Wildcats were 75% from the line, but only managed eight attempts.
Also this week ACU fell one spot in the South Central Region rankings to No. 10 after splitting games with Texas A&M-Kingsville last week. West Texas A&M continues to hold the No. 1 spot as Northeastern State, Southeastern Oklahoma, and Tarleton State make up numbers 4-6. Central Oklahoma comes in at No. 7 as the Javelinas traded places with ACU moving up to No. 9.
