Special to acusports.comHOUSTON -- The ACU Wildcats had a solid opening day at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Yeoman Field House on the University of Houston campus.
On the men's side, the Wildcats qualified three competitors for Saturday's final, while heptathlete
Camille Vandendriessche finished day one in good position.
At the end of day one, Vandendriessche, a senior from Paris, France, was in third place with 2909 points, 48 points out of second place and 63 points out of the lead. Darius Walker of Central Missouri led the competition with 2972 points and Wayne Durham of Adams State was in second with 2957 points.
Vandendriessche opened the day running 7.40 in the 60 for eighth place. He moved into fourth place after the long jump where he jumped 21-3.5. Vandendriessche took second in the shot put with a throw of 47-4.25 and moved into third place overall. He managed to hold his position by jumping 6-2.75 in the high jump. The heptathlon continues Saturday, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m.
Defending outdoor 400-meter champion
Raymond Radway ran away from the pack to win his heat and lead the qualifiers for the 400 finals with a time of 48.04. Radway, a senior from McKinney, finished seventh last year at the NCAA Division II indoor national meet in Mankato, Minn.
Julius Nyango, a senior from Aldai, Kenya, qualified for the finals in the mile winning his heat in a time of 4:24.38. Nyango finished eighth in the mile last year at the NCAA Division II indoor national meet.
Andrew McDowell led the 60-meter hurdles finalists with a time of 8.00. McDowell, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., finished fifth last year at the NCAA Division II indoor national meet.
“That is probably one of the fastest prelims I've run all season,” McDowell said. “I always end up running faster in the finals. I am confident in myself.
“Me and (assistant) coach (Abe) Brown are going to be standing out there, standing on the top. My goal for (Saturday) is to be a national champion. I want to take care of business.
“I feel like I've missed a lot of opportunities to be a national champion in the past. This is my chance. I'm ready for it and I feel like it's going to happen tomorrow.”
Ramon Sparks, a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., failed to qualify for finals in the long jump.
The women also qualified for finals in three events.
Kim Prather, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., qualified for the 400 finals, winning her heat in a time of 56.80. Prather ran lead leg of the 1,600 relay team that finished second at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn. Prather also qualified in the 200 with a time of 25.04.
Wanda Hutson, a junior from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, qualified for the 60 finals with a time of 7.60. Huston is a two-time Olympian for Trinidad and Tobago. She was a member of the 400-relay teams in 2004 and 2008.
Jessica Sloss, a junior from Amarillo, finished ninth in the women's 20-pound weight throw. Her throw of 55-10.25 bettered her personal record by more than a foot and a half. Sloss is the 2008 Lone Star Conference (outdoor) hammer throw champion.
Callie Young, a junior from Brady, had no height in the pole vault.
“I feel good about where we are,” coach Don Hood said. “With the women's side we qualified pretty much everyone that I thought we would.
“On the men's side it's been better than we predicted. Radway in the 400 was good. Everyone has advanced that was supposed to advance. Right now, we're sitting really well.”
