Wildcats win Dustdevil; Johnson takes individual crown


Final Results

LAREDO ? Abilene Christian's golf team started off the spring season right with a tournament win at the Dustdevil Open in Laredo. After a strong Monday where the Wildcats jumped out to a 17-stroke lead after two rounds, ACU closed with a  302 in the final round for a 3-round total of 894 defeating the Colorado School of Mines by 20 strokes.

Ironically, ACU's freshman Morgan Johnson competed unattached and won the individual crown. After posting a 140 in the first two rounds (70-70), Johnson closed the tournament with a 74, totaled 214 for three rounds, and defeated his teammate Hilton Funk by two strokes.

Funk led the five-man team that placed first in the season opener. Funks shot a 217 in three rounds (70-72-75), which was good for second place overall. Not far behind was Cyril Bouniol who shot a 219 (71-72-76).

The other unattached Wildcat was Michael Andruchek finished next among ACU players although he did not score with the team of five. Andruchek finished in a 10th-place tie shooting a 227 over three rounds (77-76-74).

Jose Gutierrez placed 13th with a 229 (80-73-76), Zach Sadau tied for 14th place shooting a 233 (81-77-75) and Charles Levitte finished in a 16th-place tie shooting a 235 (77-79-79).

The Colorado School of Mines shot a 914 (306-305-303) to finish in second place, UT-Brownsville's “A” team finished third at 918, and Incarnate Word who was in second place after two rounds, fell to fourth place at 922.

UT-Brownsville's “B” team was fifth at 967, the hosts ? Texas A&M-International ? placed sixth at 972, and Oklahoma Panhandle State rounded out the seven team field with a 987.

The Wildcats will take a two-week break before returning to action in Austin at the St. Edward's Spring Invitational Feb. 23-24.
