BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- Led by the 1-2 finish of
Patrick Hanauer and
Cyril Bouniol, the
18th-ranked ACU Wildcats stormed back Tuesday to win the Northeastern
State Golf Classic at the Emerald Falls Country Club.
The Wildcats trailed first-day leader Washburn (Kan.) by six strokes entering Tuesday's final two rounds and then found themselves in a tie for fourth and trailing tournament leader Central Oklahoma by three (594 for UCO to 597 for ACU) entering the third and final round Tuesday. But the Wildcats did what they needed to do in the third round, and that was shoot the best round of the tournament. They fired a 4-under-par 284 to bypass the three teams in front of them and win the team title with a three-round total of 881 (299-298-284).
Central Oklahoma finished a close second at 882 (296-298-288), while Washburn was third at 885 (293-302-290) with Northeastern State in fourth at 890 (303-297-290) and Arkansas Tech (297-299-295) and Central Missouri (302-306-293) finished tied for fifth.
Hanauer captured the individual medalist title with a three-round total of 4-under-par 212, firing 71 and 73 in the first two rounds before blistering the course for a 4-under-par 68 in the third round. Bouniol and Colby Shrum of Central Oklahoma tied for second at 3-under-par 213. Bouniol went 74-72 in the first two rounds before shooting a five-under-par 67 in the third round to pull into a tie for second with Shrum, who shot three straight 71s to finish at 213.
Zach Sadau finished 46th at 234 (85-77-72), while his ACU teammates
Charles Levitte (77-76-82--235) and
Hilton Funk (77-83-77--237) finished 52nd and 58th, respectively.
The Wildcats will return to action Oct. 6-7 at the Grand Canyon Fall Classic at the Estrella Mountain Ranch Country Club in Phoenix. The Wildcats won the team championship in at the Grand Canyon tournament last fall.
