ABILENE -- The ACU Wildcats are ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region poll, which was released Wednesday afternoon.
The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will earn a bid to the regional tournament, and right now the Wildcats are in line to earn the program's third berth in the regional tournament in the last four seasons. The conference champions from the Lone Star, Rocky Mountain Athletic and Heartland conferences will earn automatic bids to the tournament with five at-large spots up for grabs.
Angelo State -- the No. 2 team in the nation -- remains atop the regional poll after winning two of three games from ACU in Abilene last weekend. The Rambelles are followed in the poll by Southeastern Oklahoma State at No. 2, St. Mary's at No. 3, Central Oklahoma at No. 4, St. Edward's at No. 5, Midwestern State at No. 6, Metropolitan State (Colo.) at No. 7 and ACU at No. 8.
The Wildcats are back to LSC South Division action this weekend in Stephenville when they take on Tarleton State in a key three-game series. The Wildcats and TexAnns are tied atop the LSC South Division standings with 7-2 records, just ahead of third-place Angelo State, which is 9-3 in the LSC South. ACU and Tarleton State will get their series underway Saturday with a noon doubleheader, and will conclude with a 3 p.m. game Sunday.
