ABILENE - Former ACU all-America setter Lindsey Martin has been named an assistant coach on new head coach Kellen Mock's staff, and she will begin her duties the first week of August.
Martin, who graduated in December 2005 and won an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, joins former Texas A&M all-America outside hitter Laura Jones on Mock's staff. Mock played with Jones in high school at Arlington Martin High School, and played three seasons with Martin at ACU.
"Lindsey has a great eye and feel for the game," Mock said. "With her background as a setter she'll really help us by seeing more of the court during the course of a match. I'm really excited about what Lindsey brings to our program."
Martin - a second team academic all-America selection by ESPN The Magazine - was one of the key cogs in the 2005 volleyball season, the best in ACU program history. A third team all-America selection by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association, Martin helped lead ACU to a 31-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Southwest Region championship match.
The Wildcats finished the season 31-4 and ranked No. 11 in the nation. ACU won its second straight Lone Star Conference championship in 2005, and its school-record 31-match winning streak was snapped by No. 1 Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 20 in the NCAA II Southwest Region Tournament championship match.
Martin graduated in December with a 3.97 grade point average while majoring in exercise science. She was the 25th former ACU athlete to win an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Martin finished her career with 5,793 assists, which is good for 19th on the all-time NCAA Division II list and second in LSC history. Martin is far and away the all-time assist leader in ACU history with almost 1,500 more assists than previous record-holder Brittney Binder (ACU head coach Brek Horn's younger sister), who had 4,296 assists from 1996-99.
"This is something I always wanted to do," Martin said of her job at ACU. "I'm thrilled and excited to be able to do this, and to be able to coach with Kellen makes it even more exciting. I'm honored to be back at ACU in this capacity, and I'm looking forward to what the upcoming season holds for us."
