Five Wildcats named all-region

Rivera, Zepeda, Brockman named to first team

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Five ACU Wildcats have been named to the Rawlings / American Baseball Coaches' Association NCAA Division II all-South Central Region team, including three to the first team.

Junior leftfielder Johnny Zepeda, junior shortstop Ruben Rivera and junior pitcher Ben Brockman were all named first team all-region, while senior outfielder Cody Cure and sophomore pitcher Ben Maynard were each named second team all-region.  Rivera and Brockman were named all-region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

All five players were named first team all-Lone Star Conference South Division as they led the Wildcats to a 42-17 record, the LSC South Division title and a spot in the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament in Cleveland, Miss.  ACU has won more than 40 games in seven of the last nine seasons, and this year's team tied the ACU single-season for wins in the regular season with 41.

Zepeda won the LSC batting title with a .448 batting average to go along with five home rns and 48 RBI.  Rivera, who started at third base but moved to shortstop early in the season, hit .390 to go along with 41 RBI. 

Cure, who was named to the all-tournament team last weekend at the regional tournament, hit .387 with two home runs and 49 RBI.  He also set an ACU single-season record with 27 doubles.

Maynard was the LSC South Division co-Pitcher of the Year as he went 9-1 with a 3.92 ERA to go along with a team-best 70 strikeouts.  Brockman finished the season 10-3 with a 4.13 ERA and 66 strikeouts.
