Byerly, Samples earn regional bids
Pair of Wildcats will compete for individual regional title
ABILENE -- Abilene Christian golfers Matt Samples and Kyle Byerly have earned individual invitations to play in next week's NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament in Valdosta, Ga.
The tournament is scheduled for Monday-Wednesday, May 2-4, at Kinderlou Forest Golf Course. Both Samples and Byerly will play 18 holes each day. The ACU team did not earn an invitation to the tournament after finishing seventh two weeks ago at the Lone Star Conference tournament.
Byerly had his best finish of the spring at the conference tournament, firing a three-round total of 216 to finish tied for fourth. Samples posted three top-seven finishes in the spring, including an individual win at the Subway Invitational in Amarillo. He earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
ACU student assistant coach Pierre Goethals won back-to-back individual regional championships in 2003 and 2004.
