ACU trumps #10 Columbus State

No. 22 Wildcats top #10 Columbus State

ACU rolls to three doubles win to claim match, 6-3

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- ACU tennis coach Hutton Jones said before the season started that this could be one of the best men's team in the history of the program.  And now he wants everyone to look at the Wildcats that way.

That's why he scheduled a three-match trip to Georgia that will see the Wildcats take on three top-12 teams in the nation.

After the first let of that journey, it's so far, so good for the No. 22 Wildcats, who on Monday knocked off No. 10 Columbus State, 6-3, on the Cougars' home courts.

"I feel like we have a very good team, but it seems like every year we don't really get the respect and recognition I feel we deserve," Jones said. "The south and the southeast committees control a lot of what happens, and they think they're better than everybody, I think. So I hadkind of had enough, and decided to come out here and play some tough teams."

ACU opened the match by winning all three doubles matches, and then taking three of six singles matches to win the match.

"It couldn't be sweeter," Jones said. "I'm honestly not surprised. We've got a good team and I just feel like we're going to be right with everybody.

"They're probably a top-15 team, but I think we are too. This made a statement that, as long as we continue playing like we have, I think will help us the rest of the year. We've got a great shot to be a top-10 team."

The Wildcats -- now 9-4 and undefeated against NCAA Division II competition -- will continue their tour with a match against No. 2 Valdosta State at 2 p.m. Tuesday, and will conclude against No. 12 Armstrong-Atlantic State on Wednesday.
