Wildcats take 1-1 mark to Kansas
ACU to take on Mo. Southern, Pittsburg State
PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The ACU Wildcats will take their 1-1 season record to Kansas during the holiday weekend where they will play in the Pizza Hut-Comfort Inn Classic at John Lance Arena on the campus of Pittsburg State University.
The Wildcats won their first game of the season Monday night with a 61-60 win over Cal State-San Bernadino. Stephanie Riles hit a layup with six seconds left to give the win to the Wildcats, who trailed by as many as 14 points midway through the second half.
ACU will play Missouri Southern (2-0) at 2 p.m. Friday, followed by a 4 p.m. Saturday game against Pittsburg State (1-1). The other team in the four-team field is Oklahoma Panhandle State.
ACU is led this season by senior center Lynsie Blau, who has recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the Wildcats' first two games. She is averaging 15.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per games. She is the only Wildcat averaging in double figures so far, although Riles is averaing 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while Ashley King is averaging 7.0 points per game.
Senior forward Melanie Carter should be in better shape physically this weekend after suffering a high right ankle sprain late in last Friday's season-opening loss at Cal Poly-Pomona. She played just 14 minutes and scored just four points and grabbed only one rebound in ACU's win over Cal State-San Bernadino. She did, however, get the assist to Riles on the game-winning basket.
Missouri Southern is 2-0 on the season after beating both Henderson State, Ark. (53-49) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (86-80 in overtime). Missouri Southern is led by Wyketha Harrell (16.5 points per game), Aubrie Hallman (15.0 ppg) and Carol Koenig (11.5 ppg).
Pittsburg State is 1-1 after losing to Southern Indiana (91-86) and beating Colorado-Colorado Springs (72-51). The Gorillas are led by freshman Janelle Klein (21.0 ppg), who set a school record by hitting her first 18 field goal attempts. Stephanie Shanlin is averaging 17.5 ppg, while Katie Spieker is averaging 15.0 ppg.
