Wildcats head to Penn Relays

ACU to take handful of athletes to one of nation's top meets

PHILADELPHIA -- One week after dominating the competition and taking both the men's and women's team titles at the 68th Lone Star Conference track and field championship meet, a handful of athletes from the ACU men's and women's track and field teams will head to the northeast to compete in the 108th Penn Relays Carnival.

The Wildcats will send 13 athletes to compete in the meet, which is the oldest and largest in the nation. Athletes from more than 200 colleges and universities and more than 300 high schools across the nation will compete in the meet.

The highlight of the meet for the ACU men promises to be the two relays in which the Wildcats are entered. ACU will run in both the 4xmile and distance medley relays.

The Wildcats will be in the mix for the championship in both of those races. John Kemboi will be joined on the distance medley relay team by Jean-Marie Ndukimana, Bernard Manirakiza and Richard Phillips.

Ndukimana will run the opening 1200 meters, followed by Phillips on the 400-meter leg, Manirakiza in the 800 meters and Kemboi on the anchor 1500-meter leg. Kemboi's Division II-best time of 3:42.51 in the 1500 meters would rank seventh in NCAA Division I.

Kemboi, Ndukimana, Manirakiza and Martin O'Kello will form ACU's 4xmile team.

Phillips will also run the 400 hurdles, and Arthemon Sindayigaya will run the 5000 meters.

On the women's side, ACU will run both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, and, individually, Shauna-Gaye Stephens will compete in the long jump, Cassie Chaffin in the 3000 meters and Maresa Cadienhead in the high jump.
