ACU to take on St. Mary's, Panhandle State
CANYON -- The ACU women's basketball team will return to action this weekend when it takes part in the West Texas A&M 7-Up Classic.
The Wildcats, 2-3 after splitting a pair of matches last weekend at the ACU Classic in Abilene, will take on St. Mary's at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by a 4 p.m. game Saturday against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
ACU, which let an 11-point lead over No. 2 Missouri Western slip away into a 77-59 loss last Saturday, is led by sophomore forward Stephanie Riles, who is averaging 14.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
Junior center Lynsie Blau is second on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg and first in rebounding at 7.4 rpg. Junior all-America center Melanie Carter -- who has seen more limited playing time than at any time in her career while recovering from a pre-season knee injury -- is averaging 8.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
St. Mary's (1-1) enters the classic field coming off a 75-58 loss to Angelo State at the ASU Tip-Off Classic. The Lady Rattlers, who last year reached the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament championship game, are led by Meosha Nash, who was an all tournament selection at Angelo State.
St. Mary's, who will play Adams State in the classic's first game on Thursday, was picked No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA pre-season coaches' poll.
Panhandle State is 0-2 after dropping a pair of games last weekend at the Southern Colorado Classic. The Lady Aggies fell to Eastern New Mexico (84-64) and William Penn (86 81). Starlet Bohannon leads the Lady Aggies in scoring at 18.0 ppg, while Kasia Plachta is averaging 13.5 ppg.
