
Marquez voted onto Southland Conference’s All-Academic Team

ABILENE - Abilene Christian senior Renata Marquez Wednesday was announced by the Southland Conference as one of five student-athletes named second team all-academic for the 2013-14 women's basketball season.
A Southland Conference honorable mention, Marquez is a nursing major with a 3.30 grade-point average. She was joined on the second team by sophomore Janell Perez of Northwestern State, junior JaMeisha Edwards of Lamar, Sam Houston State junior Angela Beadle and Oral Roberts senior Christian Key.
The women's basketball academic first team was comprised of McNeese State sophomore Allison Baggett, Capital One Academic All-District awardees Jenny Nash of Nicholls and Ify and Kosy Mora of Incarnate Word, and Lamar junior Dominique Edwards.
Baggett - a nursing major with a 3.70 GPA - received the additional honor of being named 2013-14 Southland Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year.
In Marquez' first and only season as a NCAA DI student-athlete, the Conroe, Texas, native finished the regular season ranked among the Southland Conference's top-20 leaders in scoring (10th / 14.8 ppg), rebounding (19th / 5.9), assists (7th / 3.9) and steals (4th / 1.9).
She reached double figures in scoring 23 times this season and posted five double-doubles that raised her career total to 13. Her collegiate resume also features 14 games with 10 or more rebounds, 16 contests with five or more assists, and five games with five or more steals. Marquez recorded a career high eight steals in a blowout win at New Orleans on Jan. 9, and during a mid-February game against Arlington Baptist, she scored a career-high 32 points on 12 of 24 shooting and eight three-pointers that tied ACU's single-game record.
Marquez also started all 30 games and recorded career season highs in nearly every category, including 443 (14.8) points, 177 (5.9) rebounds, 116 assists and 57 steals. She also made 44.1 percent of her 358 field goal attempts and 34.6 percent of her 185 3-point attempts.
Marquez' final collegiate totals through 94 starts include 1,285 career points, 598 rebounds and 298 assists.
The Southland Conference All-Academic teams are voted on by each school's head basketball coach, academic advisor, and sports information directors.
