Third-Ranked Wildcats Place Sixth At Rain-Shortened Querencia Cabo Collegiate

ABILENE – Abilene Christian's third-ranked golf team finished sixth at this week's Querencia Cabo Collegiate, which was shortened to one round following two straight days of heavy rains dropped on the Baja California peninsula by Hurricane Paul.

Teams played only 12 holes Monday following Sunday's opening round, but were unable to resume at any point Tuesday. Players were called to begin play at approximately 7 a.m. PT this morning, only to have another deluge begin minutes after their arrivals to the course.

ACU was the lone NCAA Division II program within a 12-team field that featured No. 20 Florida State, No. 25 Saint Mary's of California and team champion Mississippi, which fired an eight-over-296 on Sunday.

Kentucky finished as the runner-up at 11-over-299, the Seminoles and South Florida tied for third at 12-over-300, and the Gaels were fifth at 13-over-301.

The Wildcats shot 15-over-303 to finish three strokes ahead of UT-Arlington and tournament host Santa Clara. Loyola Marymount, Arkansas-Little Rock, South Dakota State and Cincinnati rounded out the team standings.

ACU senior Alex Carpenter posted the Wildcats' best score with a par-72, tying him for second place with Loyola Marymount's Tyler Torano and South Florida's Richard James. Will Bishop of Kentucky won the individual title with a two-under-70.

Wildcat junior Trey Sullivan and sophomore Corbin Renner tied for 17th with five others at 3-over-75.

The Wildcats return to action next week, Oct. 22 to 23, for the Bruce Williams Memorial in San Antonio.
