ABILENE – The
Julie Goodenough Era at ACU got started Sunday afternoon with the first full-team women's basketball practice of the season at Moody Coliseum.
Goodenough – the former head coach at Hardin-Simmons, Oklahoma State and Charleston Southern – was hired at ACU in April to take the place of of former head coach Shawna Lavender, who is now on the women's basketball staff at SMU.
Goodenough welcomes back eight letterwinners, led by junior shooting guard
Mackenzie Lankford, a Daktronics third team NCAA Division II all-America in 2011-12. Also returning to the Wildcats in 2012-13 are seniors
Kelsey Smith,
Shelby Shipley and
Emily Miller, juniors
Savannah Smith,
Renata Marquez and Lankford, and sophomores
Sadie Dickinson and
Paige Parliament.
"It's really been a blessing to inherit a good group of players," Goodenough said. "I expect them to lead by example because they know what it takes to win in this league. This is our last chance to make a big impact on the Lone Star Conference, and that's something we've talked to our team about on a regular basis."
Goodenough also welcomes several new faces in freshmen
Whitney West,
Kynzie Newman and
Cemetra Jenkins, and a face she's familiar with in transfer
Shannon Sanders, who is from Longview but played last year as a freshman for Goodenough at Charleston Southern.
The Wildcats will get their season started on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they host Texas A&M International at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum.
