ABILENE – A jovial holiday atmosphere will encompass Moody Coliseum Saturday night, Dec. 10 when Abilene Christian presents its inaugural Christmas Slam – a fun-filled basketball doubleheader jam-packed with singing, dancing, free food and prizes.
Festivities will begin just prior to the women's 5:30 p.m. game vs. Cameron with campus clubs and organizations distributing free Christmas treats and drinks throughout the concourse. The club whose booth is judged to have the best design will win $100 from ACU Athletics.
Santa Claus and his elves also can be found on the concourse, and fans of all ages are encouraged to have their picture taken with jolly old St. Nick (Mark Lewis, Assistant Dean of Spiritual Life and Chapel Programs).
During the women's game, those in attendance will be eligible to win one of several gift cards, including one for $100 to United Supermarkets, $60 for Famous Dave's, and $40 for Buffalo Wild Wings. These same prizes can also be won during the men's game vs. the Aggies, which is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m., and in between games, free pizza will be distributed to the first 200 ACU students.
The ACU student body is also being presented with several instructions during the men's game. The first rule is that everyone must remain silent until the Wildcats' score their tenth point, after which they're encouraged to cheer loudly through the remainder of the game. Then, after the media timeout is called with under eight minutes to go in the second half, they're asked to initiate a group sing-a-long of
Silent Night.
Postgame, students will lead the crowd in a singing of
The Lord Bless You and Keep You, and then the modern holiday classic
Elf, starring Will Ferrell, will be shown on the big screens complete with free popcorn and soda.
Halftime activities include a Christmas blessing from ACU president Phil Schubert, a teddy bear toss for
Season of Caring, and a student-led Wobble line dance.
