ABILENE - Midwestern State defeated St. Edward's 1-0 in a first-round NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship match held Friday afternoon at Abilene Christian University's Wildcat Soccer Pitch.
The victory advances the fifth-seeded Mustangs (14-5-2) into the second round, where they'll be pitted against ACU (18-1-1) for the fourth time this season. The Wildcats lead the season series 2-1, with their lone loss coming in last Sunday's Lone Star Conference Championship match.
St. Edwards, which eliminated ACU from last year's NCAA Championship on pentalty kicks, saw their season end today with a final record of 15-3-1.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Mustangs, 16-12, for the match, including 9-5 in the first half, but couldn't fire a shot past goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth (four saves) or her team of defenders (two saves). Early in the match, St. Edwards was presented with several open looks at the net from inside the six-yard box, but the first shot was blocked, and another was cleared off the line by a defender before Whitworth was finally able to dive on top of the ball.
Midwestern State broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 22nd minute on forward Lindsay Pritchard's seventh goal of the season. After receiving the ball outside the midfield circle from Hanna Staley, Pritchard ran the ball out wide and down near the touch line to deliver a cross.
But the ball never hit its intended taget and instead sailed over the outreached arms of SEU's starting goalkeeper Claire Tilton and into the side netting.
The Mustangs held on from there even though St. Edward's controlled a larger portion of the possession throughout the second half, and had eight corner kicks to their three.
Danielle Licarione played the entire second half for SEU in goal and finished with four saves. Hilltopper forward Kelly Servage led all players with four shots, three on goal.
Sunday's NCAA second-round match between ACU and Midwestern State kicks off at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 18. Children five and under are admitted free.
