WACO – The ACU Wildcats moved up one spot from No. 6 in the country to No. 5 in the latest American Football Coaches' Association NCAA Division II poll, which was released Monday.
ACU opened its season last Saturday with a 34-26 win over previous No. 9 Washburn, which dropped to No. 15 in the country in Monday's poll. The Wildcats will be back in action this Saturday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., for a Lone Star Conference crossover game against Northeastern State.
ACU's LSC South Division rival Texas A&M-Kingsville made the biggest move up the poll, going all the way from No. 14 in the pre-season poll to No. 6 in this week's poll after the Javelinas beat former No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State, 16-7, last Thursday in Maryville, Mo.
The loss by the Bearcats drops the defending national champion from No. 1 down to No. 8 in the country.
Grand Valley State moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 in the country in Monday's poll, thanks to a 34-31 win over West Texas A&m, which dropped just one spot from No. 8 to No. 9 after the three-point loss to the Lakers. After Grand Valley at No. 1, the rest of the top five is Minnesota-Duluth at No. 2, North Alabama at No. 3, California (Pa.) at No. 4 and ACU at No. 5.
The other LSC teams in the poll are Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 6, West Texas A&M at No. 9 and Midwestern State at No. 13. Texas A&M-Commerce (14 votes) and Tarleton State (10 points) received votes in the poll. The Lions opened their season last Saturday with a 33-10 win over Upper Iowa, while the Texans dropped a 31-23 decision to Northeastern State.
