ACU women blister Washburn to move into regional final

ABILENE -- On the first blistering hot day of the calendar year, the ACU women's tennis team was just as hot, dispatching Washburn University before either team had a chance to work up a good sweat in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament at the Eager Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in the region, needed less than two hours to roll past Washburn, 5-0, in the semifinals. ACU will play for its 22nd NCAA regional championship and 14th straight title Friday at 10 a.m. when it takes on Tarleton State.
Just two weeks ago, the Wildcats dispatched the TexAnns, 5-0, in the Lone Star Conference championship match in Wichita Falls.
On the men's side, the top-seeded Wildcats of ACU had a semifinal bye on Thursday and will be well-rested for the noon championship match Friday against Washburn. The Ichabods eliminated Southwest Baptist with a 5-4 semifinal victory Thursday.
The ACU women cruised to three doubles wins and then saw Jaclyn Walker sweep to a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles and Dina Pavlin do the same at No. 5 singles to finish off the match. In the other women's semifinal match, Tarleton State knocked off Incarnate Word, 5-1.
In the men's semifinal match, Washburn won its third 5-4 match of the season over Southwest Baptist to move into Friday's championship match.
