
5 players voted all-region

ABILENE -- Three ACU baseball players have been voted first team NCAA Division II all-South Central Region on the Daktronics all-region team.
Senior catcher Jordan Schmitt, senior outfielder Thomas Bumpass, and junior shortstop Willie Uechi were voted first team, while junior relief pitcher Brad Rutherford and junior second baseman Chris Hall were each voted second team.
Angelo State University's Keith Towne and University of Central Missouri's Chris Matlock headlined the 2009 Daktronics All-South Central Region team today as the Player and Pitcher of the Year.
Towne is the national co-leader in home runs at 26, and ranks fourth in RBI (85) with a .759 slugging percentage, while Matlock ranks third in the nation in saves (14), with an ERA of 1.44 and 71 strikeouts to only three walks, and an opponent's batting average of .121.
The first and second teams were comprised of four starting pitchers, three outfielders and one of every other field position, including a relief pitcher. All first-team selections are now eligible for All-America honors. The Daktronics teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Uechi is hitting .419 on the season with 42 RBI, and he ranks in the nation's top 10 in hits with 96. He was voted first team all-Lone Star Conference and was also voted to the all-tournament team at the LSC Baseball Championship Tournament.
Bumpass is hitting .407 and ranks in the nation's top 25 with 64 runs scored. He was voted first team all-Lone Star Conference and was also voted to the all-tournament team at the LSC Baseball Championship Tournament.
Schmitt is wrapping up one of the great careers in LSC and ACU history. He is hitting .378 with 12 home runs and 91 RBI this season. He is the LSC and ACU career leader in hits, doubles, RBI and total bases, and he's ACU's career home run leader. He was voted first team all-Lone Star Conference and was the league's co-MVP.
Rutherford is 10-3 with a 2.66 ERA and 11 saves, becoming the first LSC player in history to record double-digit wins and saves in the same season. He was voted first team all-Lone Star Conference and was also voted to the all-tournament team at the LSC Baseball Championship Tournament. Hall is hitting .365 with three home runs and 26 RBI from the leadoff spot in the ACU lineup. He has committed just six errors on the season and was voted first team alll-LSC.
