ABILENE – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association last week presented longtime assistant coach John Walker and Wildcats Hans Hach, Julia Mongin and Nicklas Wingord several South Central Region awards.
Hach and Mongin each were named the region's Senior Player of the Year, while Wingord was selected as its Rookie of the Year. Walker, who has been associated with Wildcat tennis for about a decade, claimed his fifth-straight Assistant Coach of the Year award after helping the women's team win 29 duals and reach the NCAA semifinals.
Wingord joined the Wildcats at the semester break and went 14-12 during his first spring as a collegiate singles player. He also won 10 doubles matches in becoming ACU's first regional rookie of the year since Hach won the same award in 2011. Mongin earned this honor following her freshman season of 2010.
A four-time all-America and native of Culiacan, Mexico, Hach recently finished his final season at ACU with an 18-7 record at No. 1 singles and 18-8 mark in doubles. He was 9-1 this spring against region opponents and last fall won his third consecutive USTA/ITA regional singles championship.
A three-time Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and first team honoree, Hach is currently ranked sixth in singles and 10th in doubles.
Mongin's final year in Abilene was hindered by a late-season injury, but she still went 13-6 in singles and 21-4 in doubles in winning her third straight Lone Star Conference Player of the Year award. She played all but one of her matches at the No. 1 position and along the way went 7-1 vs. the region and 5-0 vs. the LSC.
Following last week's NCAA Championship, where she won two doubles matches with partner Brittney Reed, Mongin finished her illustrious career with an all-time record of 167-33 (.835). She is ranked 15th in singles and sixth in doubles with Reed.
A native of Jaunay-Clan, France, Mongin has been named all-America four times, all-conference eight times and won five regional championships. She received ACU's Paul Goad Award earlier this month as the school's top female athlete.
