ABILENE – Hans Hach, Micah Hermsdorf, Hannah Kelley and Julia Mongin will represent ACU Tennis this weekend at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama. The tournament, which brings together eight regional champions (and at-large selections) from DII, II, NAIA and Junior/Community College ranks, will take place at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
After first competing through their division level's bracket, players will then compete to become the overall “Super Bowl” champions. For winning the “Super Bowl”, champions earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to challenge the best DI players for the national title.
“We've had some good falls here,” head coach Hutton Jones said, “but I think this has been our best. We've played against the best, been pushed, and we're all confident going in.”
Hach and Mongin are making their second trip to Mobile in as many seasons and both going into their respective brackets as the No. 2 seed. Hach, who placed fifth a year ago in singles, will face Zevhan Zakharov of BYU-Hawai'i in the first round, while Mongin will be paired against Vanessa Gunawan from Nebraska-Kearney. Mongin placed third in both singles and doubles (with Jaclyn Walker) in 2010.
An unseeded duo, Hermsdorf and Kelley upset their way to a South Central Regional doubles championship by winning five matches from the middle of the draw. They first defeated fourth-seeded Gennissen and Innes of Dallas Baptist, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round, and then toppled sixth-seeded Pieratt and Whittemore of Arkansas-Fort Smith, 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals.
The Wildcats finished their run by upending third-seeded Perez and Fausett of Texas Southern, 6-4, 6-3, to win their first regional title.
Hermsdorf and Kelley are again unseeded at this weekend's tournament and will first battle No. 2 Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause of Lynn University.
Matches begin Thursday morning at 8:30 with first-round singles followed by doubles first-round and semifinals. Men's and women's doubles finals commence Friday evening at 5 p.m. while singles championships will be decided Saturday morning. “Super Bowl” matches kick off Saturday at 1 p.m. with all finals slated to start Sunday at 10 a.m.
